The initial consultation is typically a longer appointment to allow ample time for a through medical history, an understanding of the patients goal for treatment, and time for questions. Length of the session is also determined by what is required to provide relief. Most problems can be addressed with the patient either face up or face down, but some require treatment in both positions - the needles are typically retained for 25-45 minutes in each treatment position. Most often the initial session is $150, but if there is significant medical history or if treatment is necessary in multiple positions it can cost up to $200. Conversely, if a patients comes in with an acute sprained ankle, no significant medical history, then the initial treatment may only be $75.
Follow up treatments are typically shorter than the initial session. They include a brief review of response, treatment, and any herbal or lifestyle recommendations. These treatments are most often $75, but session length may be shorter or longer depending on the frequency of treatments, the number of treatment positions required, or the introduction of additional ailments.
Scheduling
Acupuncture for acute and chronic problems is best done frequently. The results of treatment are cumulative. For most conditions, the optimum way to schedule treatments would be to come in twice a week for 1-3 weeks based on the severity and duration of the ailment and then to extend the time between the sessions. Having stated that, many people are too busy to come in that frequently and want to know if they can still receive benefit - the answer is yes, however results may not be as quick.
